Esta palavra, «abyss», é tão importante que precisamos começar reforçando o alerta: este é apenas um breve comentário sobre contexto literário; não pretende-se discutir a doutrina relacionada.

Ambos o inglês «abyss» e o português «abismo» descendem do latim «abyssus», do grego «ἄβυσσος» (“abyssos”), significando uma imensurável profundidade, de «βυθός» (“bythós”) ou «βυσσός» (“byssós”) significando profundidade, em particular a profundeza da água (i.e. do mar, do oceano).

O termo «ἄβυσσος» está catalogado na concordância de Strong sob o número G12 e ocorre tanto na Septuaginta quanto no Novo Testamento. O termo ocorre, na sua flexão «ἀβύσσου», no texto do Gênesis para traduzir o original «תְּהוֹם» (“tehom”):

Era a terra sem forma e vazia; trevas cobriam a face do abismo, e o Espírito de Deus se movia sobre a face das águas.

Esta palavra, abismo, figura proeminentemente em Liber Aerum, publicação oficial da A⸫ A⸫ catalogada na classe A-B sob o número 30, ocorrendo 48 vezes no texto. Neste texto estão registradas visões estruturadas em 30 sucessivos “níveis” de profundidade, chamados “aethyr”, numerados em ordem decrescente de 30 para 1. Um dos usos do termo «abismo» no texto denota esta profundidade em geral ou certos níveis de profundidade em particular. Notavelmente, na visão do aethyr 11, chamado IKH, o vidente recebe diversos conselhos e advertências sobre sua passagem ao “outermost Abyss”, que claramente se referem ao que vem a acontecer logo em seguida, na visão do aethyr 10, chamado ZAX. Compare com o modo como a palavra “heaven” é usada no plural, “heavens”, ou em expressões como “lower heavens” e “heaven of Jupiter”.

Em Liber Aerum, na visão do aethyr 8, chamado ZID, o vidente obtém instrução explícita sobre como proceder para atingir o Conhecimento e Conversação do Santo Anjo Guardião. Esta instrução possui registro próprio entre as publicações oficiais da A⸫ A⸫, catalogada na classe D sob o número 8.
